Thanks Rayford, Jeff and Timothy.

The "sh -x " doesn't appear to reveal anything about the error:
+ return 0
+ iRc=0
+ '[' 0 -ne 0 -o '!' -s /tmp/.dellSP-XmlResult10698-27956.s16445 ']'
+ '[' 0 -ne 0 ']'
+ msgFmt GENERIC_FAIL_UPDATE
+ _msg GENERIC_FAIL_UPDATE
+ local search=GENERIC_FAIL_UPDATE
+ shift
++ look -t= GENERIC_FAIL_UPDATE= en.prop
+ fmt -s -w 210
+ local 'entry=GENERIC_FAIL_UPDATE=The update failed to complete'

However, Jeff's suggestion may have revealed the issue:

cd bios_extract
cp payload/* .
./biosie.bin -u -d r710-010306.hdr

<Message id="11">BIOS HDR file is corrupted</Message>

This bios is part of the SUU dvd. I'll try and download it direct from the Dell
site and give it another go.

Mike

./PER610_BIOS_LX_1.3.6.BIN --extract dir
cd dir
cp payload/* .
./biosie -u -d

-d is debug, should get more info

May I also suggest trying the rpm-based updates from the yum repo?
