Ok fair enough. To slightly adjust my original question then: if I use DSU or
an update package to stage a firmware update, is there a way to tell it's going
to be applied if I reboot? Is there a way to tell something is there waiting?

Hi

If you update the Firmware/BIOS/Application from operating system using DSU or
Dell update package then jobs will not be created in iDRAC/Life cycle
controller. The jobs will be created only when you update the
Firmware/BIOS/Application from iDRAC or Lifecycle controller.

Thanks
Santosh

That would make sense for an iDRAC but I also staged a BIOS update :-) Just for
fun I updated everything with dsu, still no jobs in the queue:

[root@test-i40e ~]# dsu --preview -n
Verifying catalog installation ...
Installing catalog from repository ...
Fetching dsucatalog ...
Reading the catalog ...
Verifying inventory collector installation ...
Getting System Inventory ...

NOTE: The preview option displays the components which can be updated based on
Catalog. This option does not update.
Run --inventory for checking the component status post DSU commit.

[root@test-i40e ~]# dsu -n

skipping a long list of updates...

Please reboot the system for update(s) to take effect [root@test-i40e ~]#
/opt/dell/srvadmin/sbin/racadm jobqueue view -------------------------JOB
QUEUE------------------------

[root@test-i40e ~]#

If this works for other people then I wonder if we've managed to turn it "off"
somehow? Is there another command, maybe lower level, for querying the LC?

IIRC, DRAC firmware does NOT require a system reboot, just a DRAC reset which
is automatically done during the update -- that's why it's not in the queue.
So, you need to test with a firmware update that requires a reboot.

Again, IIRC, network firmware requires a reboot. I'm sure there are others but
I can't remember what they are.
