Thanks! If I'm interpreting you correctly, it sounds like I *must* to
have some kind of VLAN tagging set up in order for network access to
work on a shared iDRAC/host Ethernet port?

You don't need a vlan. We run some iDRAC 6 Expresses without vlan tagging. Is your server currently on a trunk or access port?

To reveal my ignorance ... this machine has the embedded two-port
Broadcom Ethernet NIC(s), and a four-port Intel Ethernet card in the
PCIe expansion slot. They show up in Ubuntu's 'lspci' thusly:

03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82576 Gigabit Network
Connection (rev 01)
03:00.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82576 Gigabit Network
Connection (rev 01)
04:00.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82576 Gigabit Network
Connection (rev 01)
04:00.1 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82576 Gigabit Network
Connection (rev 01)
05:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5716
Gigabit Ethernet (rev 20)
05:00.1 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5716
Gigabit Ethernet (rev 20)

Is "NIC 1" the pair of Broadcom controllers, or just the first port?
Are "NIC" and "LOM" interchangeable terms here? The first embedded port
is currently connected to a switch that I don't control, but other
ports are, so it's possible that by swapping cables I could get this
VLAN tagging stuff to work.

I believe nic1 is just the first port of the onboard Broadcom.

Thanks,

Peter

You can get the iDRAC to work on the same NIC without the OS knowing
about it.. no need for teaming. I believe when we did this on Cisco
switches we set the port to trunk mode and added the VLAN for the
iDRAC on to the trunk on the switch and set the VLAN within the
appropriate network settings in the iDRAC at ctrl+e.

Then you set your switch port to have a native vlan of whatever the
server OS should be on, and also need this vlan added to the trunk.

The OS is then oblivious to the other vlan on the port but the DRAC
should work also. If you don't have access to get port changes done
then you might be out of luck unless you can put the DRAC on the
other NIC?

With regards remote management, you won't get console access with an
iDRAC express but should get ability to do power control and see fan
status etc.
