Debian lenny does work after a bit of shoe-horning as detailed below.

Here is the relevant output of lspci on an Debian lenny running kernel
2.6.29 on PowerEdge R410

01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5716
Gigabit Ethernet (rev 20)
01:00.1 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme II BCM5716
Gigabit Ethernet (rev 20)

To get those NICs working you will need at least: kernel 2.6.29-bpo.2-
amd64
Use this package:
http://packages.debian.org/lenny-backports/linux-image-2.6.29-bpo.2-amd64

You will also need firmware for these NIC drivers, the debian kernel
maintainers are prejudiced against binary "blobs" within the kernel
as it does not meet their standard of "free". In any case you will
need to download the firmware separately at this link:

http://packages.debian.org/lenny-backports/firmware-bnx2

I posted this from a previous address but I thought I might as well
repost.
