oh, clearly, as a packager, you definitely shouldn't be doing what
I suggested.

the technique I suggested has been useful, though, working around 
various rpm requirements from redhat.  

for instance, redhat has decided that if I have X11 libs, I therefore
need X11 fonts.  Not unreasonable on the face of it.  

OTOH, on headless servers running java apps, X11 libs are necessary for
sun's jvm, but the system will never need fonts.
