The latest kernel from backports is 2.6.30. You should do 
http://backports.org/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=instructions
I think it's not necessary anyway. Apt-get install firmware-bnx2 should do the 
trick with debian kernel.
Did you run update-initrams and updated bootloader? I think the firmaware is 
missing in your initrd.
