One of the things you should check, is wether you still have a correct
resolv.conf, or not. That might be the reason why you can't cconnect to
any server onece you brought up the connection maually. Or look at the
output of 

route -n

to see where the default route points to. 

One of the things I hate about those prconfigured packages is that they
take charge of things, unless you tell them not to. If it got rid of your
resolv.conf, write a new one, and then look for resolv.conf in
/etc/rc.config, and say "no". (Just say no! :)  )

The other thing that might help is go through your network setup in yast,
and rewrite ot. 

If nothing works, send me your resolv.conf and the output of route -n
