I have a similar problem.
Something with the IOASYNCMAP and I/O error.
I have a pool of modems on a Cyclom board, Linux 2.0.35, ppp 2.3.5, SMP.
When my clients that auth with PAP log in I got that message on the logs,
and they cannot login. The others clients managed to enter!
The problem was with the ppp. It try to lookup the last "*" character from
papsecret file. I modified the PPP and the problem was gone!
The PPP was tryng to lookup the "*" but my line to my provider was down,
and the named was restarted. What a stupid coincidence!
