Hmmm, interesting ... I'll test char auth here to see if it works even 
after the system reaches the weird state.

Could you please explain this better ?? I didn't understand ...
How did you fix ?? By replacing the pppd software ?? By changing the
pap-secrets file ??

Now, new data for ya: I noticed after tons of tests that once the problem
happens, a '(modprobe <zombie>)' process shows up. Then, just by guess
(this zombie process reminded me of kerneld problems from the past), I
disabled module autoloading capabilities from the kernel and
recompiled/re-linked/re-installed it. Then I rebooted the system and
loaded the necessary modules manually.

Result: the system ran overnight with the _same_ tests without a hitch,
i.e., no problems at all !!

Any hints ?? The modutils I'm using is 2.1.55, and it's my first suspect,
but I'd like to hear from you before I upgrade it.
