Yes, pppstats and /proc/net/dev are reliable sources of byte usage but for
the moment of disconnection (ip-down) this information has already
dissapeared and hence cannot be logged. The idea here is to get the
stats at the one difinitive moment of disconnection, log it with the other
user stats and deal with it later.
