I had similar problem with some kernel pieces until I realized
that I forgot to copy fresh System.map from src/linux to the boot
directory. Maybe your case is the same.
I don't use "make install" for some reason so I need to handle 
zImage and System.map placement manually.

You may also want to create fresh /etc/conf.modules
if you changed your set of modules or configuration.
