parity

I am trying to setyup pppd in debian and I keep getting disconnected
with the following error
Recive serial line is not 8 bit clean:
Problem:  all had 7 bit set to 0
now on my redhat box I don't have this problem
minicom on debian doesn't have this and their set to 8N1
how do I find out the parity for pppd?
