I think you have some problem with locking your device: Probably
mgetty thinks that the device is not used and starts the initialization.
Use ttyS? both for mgetty and pppd.
Moreover there is a bug in pppd so that you must not use the option
"updetach" with mgetty. (I recently posted that to this group but
got no response...).
