It sounds like you haven't set up resolv.conf or your DNS server correctly. If you can ping the ISP but not further, it sems to look for a nameserver somewhere. Can you ping IP adresses (unresolved). If so, make sure you enter your nameserver (or the ISP's) in resolv.conf.
