Humm, Odd that the only combinition that I got to work with 2.2.1 is

alias ppp-compress-21 ppp_deflate    #added when ppp-2.3.5 installed
alias ppp-compress-24 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-26 bsd_comp

Are you and I doing something different in the kernel config??
