This question really needs to go into a faq.  It keeps showing up but I
haven't seen any hard documentation other than helpful messages on the
various support lists.

Add to conf.modules (or modules.conf as your system prefers)
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
