Why is my connection so slow?

Hey there ppl's,
                    I'm new to linux and i was wondering why my conn. is
so slow,.i havent played with ppp at all, just set it up through the
network configuration. I'm running RH 5.2, with a Diamond Supraexpress.
The connection is solid, just very slow. Webpages crawl as well ftp. Any
ideas, please advise...
