The problem with that is that the two modems don't seem to start the pppd
at the same time. I used to have excactly that configuration. The way I
did that was.
start dip on both ends, to make the modem connection.
Once the modems are conected just start pppd and with nothing but the IP
adresses in the options file.
like pppd /dev/ttySx whatever it is.
That worked best for me. I never had any luck with the persist in the
options file.
