I have temporarily suspended my efforts to automate connecting to my ISP,
after endless fiddling with ppp-on, ppp-off and ppp-on-dialer as per
PPP-HOWTO. I can connect by running minicom, logging in there, and quitting
the app. without disconnecting (C-a q), then issuing the command "pppd -d
-detach /dev/ttyS1 38400 &". I am then able to use ftp, telnet, etc -- not
exactly what I had in mind, but functional. I used ftp to get the latest
version of netscape; unpacked it with the command "gzip -dc xxx.tar.gz | tar
-xvf -", then ran ns-install. All of this procedure went as planned, with
the files installed into /home/barry/netscape. The problem? When I
establish a PPP connection as above and attempt to launch netscape, I get a
message that the binary can't be launched. I checked the permissions, and
they're kosher. As usual these days, I'm stumped.
