If you are running bash and the error message is

        can't execute binary file       (or so)

it's definitely not something related to netscape but to the shell. I
had the problem, too, with netscape and with other binaries. I solved
the problem. It was very simple, but just now I dont remember what it
was. If I remember i'll tell you.
For now try fiddling a bit with directories/path, current dir in path or
not and things like that
