At work, we use DHCP to assign IP addresses and domain names to each machine. In many instances, configuration information for, say, email software will refer to SMTP host as simply "mail", as opposed to "mail.ourdomain.co". Windows graciously appends the domain name before doing a DNS lookup, and the proper IP is returned for the closest SMTP server to their present location. Anyway, doing the same thing via a PPP connection isn't working. I don't see any option for passing a Domain Name to the connecting client. So, these same computers that work via Ethernet/DHCP don't resolve the name "mail" when connecting through ppp. Does anyone know how to get Windows clients to pick up domain name info through a ppp connection? I'm running the ppp server on a RedHat Linux 5.1 Intel machine. PPP software is release 2.3.3.
