I sent a note to the list about this, but I suspect my note got lost
somwehere.. hmm..
Anyway, about a month ago we bought a Digi Xem card with a single 16 port
box hanging off it (the Xem cards can take up to 4 of these boxes). Since
then, we've had numerous problems with lines locking up. In each case,
pppd was still running, but the line was clearly disconnected.
I'm not sure what version of mgetty we're using (I did not setup part of
the machine) and pppd is 2.2.0g, with some private patches to support
forcing IP static IP addresses and passing the username provided out as
the 6th param to ip-up.
In the end, I wrote a script to catch the state where the pppn pid file
exists, but there's no indication the line is actually up. It kills around
4 or 5 processes a week at the moment.
Thankfully, we have step-on-no-answer enabled on the dial-in pool.. but
it's an ugly kludge solution IMO..
If anyone else has some thoughts, I'd very much welcome them! :)
