Well now you've got me confused (not difficult, trust me).  GENERIC #7???

I take it these are options that come with your distribution... but I have
no idea what kernel version you are talking about much less which
distribution.

Many (some?) distributions do not include the full source code (by default).
They've only included enough files for you to compile other programs
against.

If you think this might apply to you then get a new archive from
ftp.kernel.org (or it's mirrors) and try to compile it.  See
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html for more guidance (and
don't forget to read linux/Documentation/Changes if you are compiling a
newer kernel version than came with your linux distribution)
