you're not only going to require the 2.2.3
sources, but you're likely to recompile the ppp.
i hope you've read /usr/src/Documentation/Changes*
for the current usability of the ppp version you
are using with kernel 2.2.3.
chances are that your current ppp modules weren't
updated properly ( :/ i think) or because they're
complaining about how they were meant for a prior
kernel version instead of the newer one you've
installed.
it's a good idea to either obtain patch upgrades
for your kernel, or install it via the complete
source and not rpm
also.
