pppd not recording login details in wtmp/utmp

How do I get pppd to record login details in utmp/wtmp so i can see
who's on with the "who" command?  I am using mgetty/pap for the login
functions, and the "login" option just doens't seem to do the trick.
You can log on, but the system doesn't show it.

I'm currently using pppd 2.3.5  Is there a later version?  Also, can I
get a log of bytes sent/received?
