You misread.  That only applies to the 'active-filter' option.  You can
still use the 'demand' option with Linux.  Technically, 'demand' requires
that you use a static IP address for the connection (for an explanation,
see man page section 'Routing'), though many linux users have made it work
with dynamic IP.
