I had this problem while ago, Two things you can try..

1. Play around with your chat parametrs, such as  asyncmap, escape etc..(read 
the PPP-HOWTO & Robert Hart's FAQ). It's also good idea to set kdebug 7 so you 
can see what's really going on. if this doesn't work,

2. Look at your ppp-on-dialer, you may need to add additional 'send' 'receive' 
pairs, if your ppp server doesn't start ppp automatically when logged in.(This 
was my problem) In this case the error messege you got is totally bogus. Sort 
out what exactly your server need to start ppp when you logged in, you may 
need to type ppp explicitly to start the ppp session on you server. In this 
case just add 'your server prompt' and 'ppp' as an additional receive/send 
pair at the end of your ppp-on-dialer script.
