How long is forever?  Is this telnet to your box or another box on a LAN?
Does it do this when you use IP numbers and not FQDNs?

Is *this* over a PPP connection or is it too "not using pppd?"  Over PPP it
might be a sign that the IRQ configured for the modem device file is not
the IRQ that the modem actually uses.
