Over what medium are you connecting if you are not using pppd.. ethernet? Can you explain your situation more; like explaining what client software you are using and what method of networking (modems, ethernet, etc) is in use. Or are you talking about dialing into an mgetty rather than telnet? Also as Clifford mentioned, the modems under Linux can act strange if you are sharing IRQ's. They will not complain sometimes, but then they will be excruciatingly slow.
