i am having a very peculiar problem that only seems to affect certain files that
i try to download.
i am using ip masquerade, but the problem also happens on my main linux box
that's actually connected to the internet. i have redhat 5.2 (and saw the same
exact problem with 5.1) and a zoom 56K dual mode modem (2919L).
the problem is that some files refuse to download. larger files work fine.
smaller files work fine. but certain files will not download, no matter what
program i use (linux ftp, linux netscape, NT with ws-ftp, NT with netscape). the
file will either get to some reproducible percentage done (like 11% or something),
or it will entirely refuse to download.
the best example is at:
http://premium.officeupdate.microsoft.com/officeupdate/DistribDownload/sr1off97ddl.htm
this is the microsoft office 97 service release 1. the file name is
sr1off97.exe, if you want to look elsewhere for the download.
i cannot get this file to even start downloading. i've tried it from the
microsoft site, from other sites i found with hotbot, and from my own ISP's ftp
site. none of them will even start downloading.
as soon as i start the download, the ppp connection will start to report errors
(the "bad fcs, excess blah blah" message). if i check with ifconfig, ppp0 reports
numerous dropped packets. before i start downloading the problem files, there are
no errors at all, even with significant browsing around or other downloading. only
these problem files seem to cause the "bad fcs" message.
i've tried playing with my MTU and such in /etc/ppp/options. i've tried a lot of
variations. with smaller MTUs, many more files are problematic than just the file
above. for example, i cannot get www.tvguide.com to show me tv program listings
with the recommended MTU of 552. but with larger MTUs, this sr1off97.exe file
still refuses to download.
i suspect that i don't have the proper modem settings, but why would the hardware
handshaking work with a huge file (like netscape 4.5, 15 megs or so), but not work
with smaller files (sr1off97.exe, like 8 megs)?
i've also tried escaping control characters. i did an "escape" option in my
ppp/options that said to escape every control character. i've tried the same thing
with the netconfig tool (the escape control characters check box). this didn't
allow the file to download either.
so, i'm just about at the end of the rope that i have allowed for hanging myself
with. does anyone have any clues about why this is happening or how i can get
around it? i forgot to mention; when i boot to win95 on the same machine with the
same modem, win95 can download the file fine. this annoys me even worse for some
reason.
help?
thanks,
chris koeritz.
