Only one does (with SuSe Linux 6.0 on it, which should be similar to the RedHat
distribution), an it does not before, this is the point I can't understand. The other
machine starts ppp without problems (under DOSLinux with kernel 2.2.1 and ppp 2.3.3).
But I cannot run the same Linux version on
both computers, because the newer one crashes when DOSLinux loads and the older one
has no CD drive and not enough disk space to install SuSE Linux.

No other message. This is the first and only message, when pppd
is started.
Playing around I found that the error doesn't occur when I attempt
to start pppd on /dev/ttyS0, which is directed to the infrared port.
When I start pppd on /dev/cua1 pppd tells me that the kernel had
no ppp support or ppp would not be configured properly.
I checked that the ppp module is loaded before. cat /proc/modules
contains:
ppp 5 0
slhc 2 [ppp] 0
What slhc is or means is not clear to me. The computer however
hasn't to do with Slip or Slip01 in any way. Network configuration
seems to be o.k., since I'm able to establish a plip connection. For
several reasons I need a connection by a serial cable now.
