Several users of Zoom Model 2919 (Lucent-based) internal ISA modems have noticed stalls or hangs while connected to the Web. Personally, I've experienced it most while attempting to download certain files. File size is not a factor, but file content appears to contribute to the problem. Specifically, I've isolated the fact that a file which contains a large number of NUL (0x00) characters in a row will cause the stall. A side symptom of the problem is that the same file(s) will download fine when operating the modem under Win9x. This implies that some piece of linux software is involved in the problem. I've reproduced the problem under several kernel versions, several versions of setserial, and several versions of pppd. I'm currently using kernel 2.2.3, setserial 2.15, and pppd 2.3.7. I have no explanation for the problem yet, but the workaround is to turn off hardware compression by adding %C0 to your modem initialization string. On my system, turning off compression completely stops the stalls/hangs (so far). My current initialization string for this modem under linux is AT &F E0 S7=60 B0B15 M0 %C0 It's based on the sequence used under Win95, but I've removed the redundancy. The "M0" is just to quiet the speaker. Thank you very much to every who helped me narrow the problem and find this workaround. Good luck.
