I can't answer all questions but hope to answer some.  

In your command
mount -t umsdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

maybe "umsdos" is not understood, should be msdos?  umsdos is for actually
running Linux on a FAT16 partition.

I don't know if Linux specifically supports the Superdisk (LS-120), but newer
BIOSes support it, IDE version.

Do you actually have DVD, or are you thinking of buying?  I believe Linux does
not (yet) support DVD.  DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM manufacturers take note, you could
get a big leg up on the Linux market by being the first to include Unix/Linux 
support.  So far there is no big rush to produce DVDs, and most new computers
are sold with CD-ROM, not DVD.  I read that the standard for DVD is not yet 
settled, might be agreed on later this summer, so it might be better to wait
than to buy DVD now and possibly have to buy again for the new DVD standard.
