When using the stock kernel 2.2.9 with ppp 2.3.5, I'm getting strange
bandwidth problems. Basically, with a 56K modem which connects at 50666
every time (no matter which computer it's connected to), very clean phone
lines (this company has digital trunking), I'm getting about 1.6K to 1.8K
per second. I get about 5-6K/sec from a Windows machine connected to the
same modem. The ISP has confirmed that the modem connection isn't the
problem, it's V.90, the compression is negotiated successfully, and there
are no retrains either time.

This is on a RedHat 5.2 based system which has had the kernel and relevant
utilities upgraded, pppd is the stock RedHat build.

I and the ISP suspect a version conflict of some sort. Any suggestions
as to what may be the problem? If no, I plan to upgrade pppd to the latest
and/or downgrade the kernel to 2.2.7, which I know is working properly at
another site.
