Do you know of any specific danger involved in having pppd
setuid-root?  If so would you mind telling me the details?

I have spent a fair bit of effort trying to make pppd safe, and AFAIK
as long as you don't go using the `noauth' option it should be OK.
(You can use noauth safely in a file under /etc/ppp/peers/ as long as
you also specify the tty name and connect script in the same file.)
