If you want to have your Linux host use the ppp connection as your default
route, you MUST use the defaultroute option in your pppd options (on the
command line in the script). All the problems you discuss in detail here are
the result of your not having done so.
Now ... you also say that "My modem hangs up when I use defaultroute." This
is the part you need to work on.
1. What does "hang up" mean? In this conetxt, I can think of at least 3
possible meanings. Please describe what happens in more detail.
2. HOW do you add the defaultroute option? What does the relevant line of
ppp-on look like after you add it?
3. When you try to initiate a connection with the defaultroute option added,
what do your logs say about the attempt? (probably /var/log/messages, if
you're using a standard syslogd setup under Slackware, which I surmise is
your distribution - at a guess, Slackware 3.4).
