Some of these are designed to work specifically with ppp and some are
general network config files. All the ones with 'ppp' are of course ppp
specific files, as are options, ppprc and pap-secrets. Options and ppprc
are optional in that they can contain the same options that you might
otherwise pass as command-line options. You don't *have* to use these.
RH for one installs a default options file (I believe). pap-secrets is
only necessary if your ISP uses PAP style authentication (most do).
chap-secrets is an alternate possibility here as well.
You should check your ISP's website to make sure whether you need to
have PAP set up or not. They should at least provide you this much info,
but likely will not be much further help. It won't hurt to ask though.
If you need PAP, be sure to include the 'user' option to pppd as well as
setting up pap-secrets.
The other ones probably should be set up and I would think a basic
install would do a certain amount of this for you. You should try 'ping
localhost' to see if basic networking is working. If this works, you
probably don't need to worry much with these at this point.

Net-3-HOWTO is very heart-warming <g> reading as well.
Many PPP HOWTOs listed at linux.com (I counted 27). Some of these are
specific to troubleshooting.
