Adding "novj" to /etc/ppp/options seems to have fixed
the problem. Thanks everyone for your help!

A few people wrote about the lack of a hostname on my
system. How can I tell it my hostname before I
know my IP address?

Note that the Ricochet wireless service assigns
IP addresses dynamically. On RedHat 5.1 I waited until
after the connection was established, did an nslookup on
the assigned IP address, and used "hostname" to assign
myself the appropriate Ricochet hostname. The result
would be something like mg-206253202-93.ricochet.net.

>From then on everything worked the way you'd expect.

I'm not sure yet how well this approach will work on
RedHat 6.0. Gnome complains if it starts before the
hostname is established, and I'm not sure what other
side effects there might be.
