It's likely extraneous data somehow getting into the serial line. That or
a speed related or flow-contorl configuration problem.
It *may* help to add the pppd option kdebug 7 and run pppd for a few
minutes. This produces hex output of data coming and going, a lot of hex
output. Look at the hex numbers for the bad frames and translate a few to
ASCII to see whether there might be recognizable text present.
