I have the same problem since last friday. Half a year without any
trouble and then out of a sudden the same symptoms.

My guess: your partner's side doesn't respond.
Normally you should see your partner sending an answer which will be
logged as "rcvd [LCP ...." when the machines talk about their abilities
to communicate.

Do you login to a terminal (user:/password:) using chat/diald or is
there no identification before starting the pppd?
Answer to terminal: pppd must be started on the remote side within your
terminal.
Answer to pppd: ???? I'm looking for this answer too. Tried different
settings which change the LCP size and parameters. No sign of live from
remote. But still seems to work under Windoze.

Any help appreciated.
