I'm new here (to linux as well). This sounds similar to a problem I'm having
with pppd dialing the IBM Global Network. PPPD Quite happily connects to a
local ISP and authenticates using PAP.
Unfortunately I can't give Kernel & PPPD versions except to say that I'm
using a redhat 5.2 distribution.
The IBM.NET web pages specify PAP and the following construct for the
username:

service.account.accountname

where service is:     internet
account is eg.         fred
accountname eg.    fred001

However this results in the following entries in my /var/log/messages :

Sep 6 22:02:25 linux pppd[1072]: Serial connection established.
Sep  6 22:02:26 linux pppd[1072]: Using interface ppp0
Sep  6 22:02:26 linux pppd[1072]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
Sep  6 22:02:56 linux pppd[1072]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Sep  6 22:02:56 linux pppd[1072]: Connection terminated.
Sep 6 22:02:56 linux pppd[1072]: Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:
Sep 6 22:02:56 linux pppd[1072]: Problem: all had even parity
Sep  6 22:02:57 linux pppd[1072]: Exit.

Does this look familiar to anyone?

Thankyou,
Don Harvie
