Hi! all your friend means here by 'stream' is that pppd must not try to login using a clear login and password, but must authenticate using either pap or chap protocols. The ppp stream he is referring to is almost certainly the same thing you would see on the screen if you just typed pppd on the command line without any options. Don't have CHAT try to login for you, just have it dial the number for you and then let it turn it over to pppd. pppd should then be configured to do the logging in.
