Well, I just had the same problem with RedHat 6.0 There is an answer on the
RedHat Web Page under the RedHat 6.0 FAQ
There are apparently "aliases" for these compression module names. I had to
add the following lines to my /etc/conf.modules file:

alias ppp-compress-21 bad_comp
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate

I was not aware that this was required for 5.2, but it sure looks like it!
It seemed to fix my problems (I still have one problem I will writeup later
hoping to get some help)
