I have an intermittent problem on a RedHat 6.0 server with kernel 2.2.5-15.
I am running ppp 2.3.7 and have a dedicated dial-up line. The link will
come up and will run fine for some random time (varies from 1 hour to one
week but usually good for a day or more). I do see occasional framing
errors, but the link seems to work fine.
Once the problem occurs, I get the following symptoms:
Outside mailers can not connect to SENDMAIL daemon and POP access is not
possible
I can ping the server from my Local area net but I can not telnet into the
machine from my LAN
I can not perform any Internet functions (can't ping the other side of my
ppp connection or any other hosts)
I can see that my packets are sent but received packets show framing errors
I can perform most local commands but I can not execute the MAILQ command
(hangs until I hit CTRL-C)
I must reboot the machine and when I reboot "closing ppp" FAILS according
to the messages sent to the console
I see nothing alarming in my log files. I just set up the debug option on
pppd to see if I can catch a
One person told me that I have to turn off VJ compression with my ISP, but
would that cause this type of intermittent error?
I have captured the pppd start-up session and can post that if anyone
wishes to look at it.
There is another machine that is identical except for a different NIC card
and a different ISP which has not seen this problem.
Any help greatly appreciated.
