In another example of documentation that is wrong, a manual for one of my
modems says that any value above 127 for S2 disables the escape character,
but it's wrong.  For example, after setting S2=128, sending three NUL
characters with their high bits set puts the modem into command mode.
Sometimes  I wonder if modem manuals are actually written by the modem
manufacturer, or if they simply cut-n-paste from a Hayes manual.
