The book is "PPP Design and Debugging" by James Carlson, Addison-Wesley
Publishing, ISBN 0-201-18539-3. I prefer it to Andrew Sun's book but
other's may not agree. It's written from the viewpoint of a full-time PPP
implementor while Sun's "Using and Managing PPP" is concerned more with
specific systems, their configurations, and their problems. But I do have
the Sun book and it does provide useful system-specific information.
You might want to check
http://people.ne.mediaone.net/carlson/ppp
which has many PPP related links.
James Carlson is a regular contributor to comp.protocols.ppp, he is very
articulate, and he has an amazing depth of knowledge about PPP and anything
remotely related to it.

Good luck, intermittent problems aren't fun.
