Sounds like you've got a brain-o in /etc/modules.conf (or /etc/conf.modules);
I don't think you need any ppp related directives at all there for 2.2
and earlier kernels.

[BTW, you should avoid non-us-ascii characters (like "�") in message headers,
if you need them there's a spec for encoding them safely..]
