I'm new to PPP and dialup connections in general, but I have 2 guesses:

1. Your ISP configured this modem to use no protocol, like it says. My
guess is that when it says "PROTOCOL: NONE", it's doing raw character
communications, and won't know what to do with PPP stuff.

2. This is the normal login sequence, and once you're logged in, your pppd
and the server's pppd will start talking using PPP. Take a look at the PPP
HOWTO (http://www.linuxhq.com/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO.html) and/or the READMEs that
come with the pppd package. The examples of chat scripts seem like you
might be getting the expected feedback.

That's my stab. Hope it's helpful.

Subject: question on PPP connection

hello, Just wanted to ask about an option I saw on the messages log as I am
watching the PPP connection.

The ISP works without having to enter ppp.

after the ATDT50504 telephone number, I see
CONNECT
PROTOCOL: NONE

COMPRESSION:NONE

After this i get the login and password stuff.

I tried to send ppp to the protocol prompt but this was ignored and NONE
came up again.

Is this info supposed to come from the Modem? What about the Compression
setting? I was playing with this because I was getting very slow
connections.
