The default route is set somewhere in the boot-up files.  Doing

find /etc/rc* -print|xargs grep default 2> /dev/null

should show where.  I've never used linuxconf and so can't help there.

It might be appropriate to remark that simply commenting out the statement
that sets the default route may not survive beyond the next reboot.  That's
one of the risks of using a configuration program, it hides the basic steps
and may do strange (to me anyway) things.
