Hmm.  This message shouldn't appear with the noauth option.  As root,
try "pppd noauth lcp-max-configure 1" at the command line and see if
the first LCP negotiation message appears.  It should be similar to

~}#!}!}!} }4}"}&} } } } }%}&}=4=H}'}"}(}" ~   

(but the exact character string depends on what's in the configuration
files)

If it does then I'd guess that pppd must be launched with a script
and have the "auth" option as a pppd argument.  That would override
the noauth in your options file.

Otherwise I can't think of anything else that might cause this behavior.

I saw nothing wrong.  In any case the options file contains the noauth
option, which is the option that's needed to get past this message when
you have a existing default route.
